Myths & facts

Do rattlesnakes always rattle?

No. Silence does not make an unknown snake safe to approach.

Southern California snake habitat

A rattlesnake may remain still, attempt to move away, or defend itself without rattling first. A rattle can also be small or damaged. Keep your distance from any snake you cannot confidently identify, and never rely on sound alone.
